It has become a quintessential rite of passage to be forcibly crowded among hoards of children into a loud, dank, rumbling bus, be it city or school, only to collapse in a safety-belt-less lump, annoyed at the seat-kicker behind you and nauseated from the faceless driver’s choice of the road with both the most stop signs and potholes of any in the neighborhood. “The Wheels on the Bus” celebrates that incomparable experience.
Otherwise known as “The Bus Song,” this “imitation song” has been included in songbooks since the 1960’s though no one is clear as to its author. New verses and sounds have been added over the years, and the lyrics vary by region. Fun fact: in the United States, money makes a “clink”, but in Britain it goes “chink.”
lyrics
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town.
The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish,
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish"
The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish"
All through the town.
The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep"
The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep"
All through the town.
The doors on the bus goes open and shut
Open and shut, open and shut
The door on the bus goes open and shut
All through the town.
The driver on the bus says,
“Move on back, move on back, move on back”
The driver on the bus says,
“Move on back!”
All through the town.
The wheels on the bus...
Alright kids, watch your step!
And you, you and you-
Move to the back of the line
I see you back there
Don't make me tell your mama!
Watch the closing doors!
The doors are closing
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town.
The babies on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!
Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah!"
The babies on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!"
All through the town.
The mamas on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh,
Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh"
The mamas on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh"
All through the town.
Ask your mama, and your daddy too
Ask your mama, and your daddy too
